Marketing Ideas
For Small Businesses

Marketing ideas for small businesses? That's easy...great marketing ideas are everywhere. These are the best of the best.

Over the years, I've heard thousands of fantastic ways that small business owners market their businesses.

I've culled out my very favorites, the ideas that are fun and creative and often very easy, to share with you here. Enjoy!

The best way to get a good idea
is to get a lot of ideas.

Some of the best marketing activities for any small business include staying in touch with your current clients.

They are your best word-of-mouth advocates, and the more you stay in touch with them and cultivate your contacts with them, the stronger your relationship with them will be (and often they will share the news about what you offer with others).

Some easy ways to regularly connect with your clients include:
  • Monthly (or weekly) ezine or newsletter
  • Monthly phone calls to all of your clients
  • Call your clients on their birthday
  • Send an email or postcard confirmation of their upcoming meeting with you
  • Send clients articles on topics they are interested in
  • Send a quarterly client survey
Sending cards on a regular basis is also a great way to stay in touch with your clients.

Some great times to send cards include:
  • Birthday cards – for your clients, their spouses, and their kids
  • End of year ‘newsy’ update to all of your clients
  • Anniversary card for the date they became your client
  • Get well cards
  • Sympathy cards
  • Congratulations on purchase of home, retirement, birth of a new baby or new grandchild, etc.

If you really want to go the extra mile to build your relationship with your clients, you might even consider:
  • Visiting your clients in the hospital
  • Sending a sympathy card after the death of a special pet
  • Calling or sending a card to remind husbands of their upcoming anniversary or the birthday of their spouse
  • Walking your clients out to their car from your office when it is raining (with umbrella), snowing, or when they could use assistance
  • Attending the funeral of your clients' spouse
  • Calling or sending a card to let your client know you are thinking of him/her on the 1-year anniversary of the death of their spouse

  • Select 4-5 of these marketing ideas for small businesses that you really like, plan them, put them on your calendar, and create a system so they happen.
