Your Marketing Niche

Defining a specific, focused, narrow marketing niche is one of the very best ways to get better marketing results, and it doesn't cost you a dime.

Except, of course, for the time it takes you to define it.

:)

In fact, it is by far the most cost-efficient, effective marketing tool in your tool belt.

You can't know where to begin as long
as your focus is on working with anyone.
But once you define precisely who
you’re most interested in
and are best suited to serve,
almost as if by magic,
you'll have an idea about where to begin.

PAUL & SARAH EDWARDS

Most small business owners are experienced, knowledgeable, and professional. They know what kind of business they are in; they are coaches, financial advisors, speakers, consultants, and so on.

However, many are still struggling to get enough business to achieve their personal and professional goals.

Here are some of the most common concerns many of them express regarding marketing and growing their business:
I'm really struggling with a lack of clarity around who I am trying to reach, what specific problems I help them solve, and how I do it.

I wish I knew what kind of marketing was best for my business!

Understanding how and where to find my ideal client is a big issue for me...

I really want to clarify who my ideal clients are, where I can find them, and how I can reach them with the kind of communication that I use.

Figuring out my niche is something I have been struggling with for 4 years.
For those of you who recognize yourself in any of those comments, you are certainly not alone. The great majority of small business owners are struggling in this same area.

So how can you stand out to your potential clients?

One very effective way to stand out is to choose a marketing niche.

No one else can do exactly what you do, in exactly the same way.

Once you have chosen a niche, you know how to differentiate yourself from everyone else who does something similar.

In fact, once you declare a niche,
it is almost as if your competition goes away.

Nothing like being a big fish in a small pond, hmmm?

Having a niche helps you answer questions like "how are you going to reach your clients with your marketing activities?"

Knowing your niche also helps you set up your office structure, which needs to support the kind of clients you work with.

You need to know whether your target clients are comfortable with technology if you plan on staying in contact with them by email, for example.

In addition, knowing your marketing niche supports you in creating your website, brochures, business cards, and all other marketing materials, because you can design and write them with your specific target clients and their unique needs in mind.

In fact, everything in your business, from developing your products and services, to making your marketing decisions, to planning how you will grow your business, even to choosing the colors on your business cards—all are driven by your selected niche.

“Like many small business owners, I struggled for a couple of years with identifying a specific niche for my coaching business.

I had an idea about what direction I could go in but after working with Sue's tools and her expertise, it became very clear that I wanted to assist women who have home based businesses get their finances organized so they can build their wealth.

After only 4 weeks of working with Sue, I launched The Finance & Wealth Coaching Program which attracted over 20 clients within the first two months which has had a significant impact on women's lives in dealing with their finances."

Choosing a niche also helps you:
~ find a nice, simple, compelling way to describe what you do so people can easily understand and remember what you offer.
~ have your clients know exactly how to refer you, and who they should refer you to (more of those clients you really love working with).

~ spend a lot less time marketing your business, and lot more time doing what you love, whether that’s working with more clients or spending more time at the beach, playing with your kids, or taking a nice long bath at the end of the day.

~ create a business card, website, and brochure that work in your favor 24-hours a day, even while you are sleeping.

~ generate word-of-mouth, top-of-mind business that seeks you out.
When I first started my business in 1998, I did not have a niche. I understood the huge advantages of niche marketing, but just didn't know how to go about it.

It took me several years, hundreds of hours reading every marketing book I could get my hands on, and thousands of dollars working with four different marketing professionals to figure out my marketing niche.

I'm going to show you an easier way.

In the process of figuring out myniche marketing definition, (which is made up of yourtarget marketing definition and specialty), I learned a lot.

I started sharing what I had learned with my clients (they wanted to figure their marketing niche out, too!)

I kept refining the process to make it easier.

I started teaching groups and classes to show other professionals how to create atarget marketing system (at last count, over 2,700 small business owners from 27 countries).

What you are going to learn has been successfully used by real people, just like you and me. Check out these articles on niche marketing to hear some of their stories.

Once you have defined your marketing niche, you can create your long-term target marketing strategy, which is your plan to become known as THE expert in that niche.

To get started (or if you are wondering 'just what the heck is a marketing niche, anyway?'), the first step is to take a peek at yourniche marketing definition...
